Churchill at a Glance
Churchill is located on the Hudson Bay and for several months annually is an ice-free
port. In October, polar bears congregate here by the hundreds on the edge of the
tundra. Here they wait for the waters of Hudson Bay to freeze so they can return
to the ice sheets and commence hunting seals. For photographers, the view, and
the bears, are tailor-made for a dramatic photo. Wapusk
National Park is located outside Churchill and is one of the world's largest
known polar bear maternity denning areas, offering incredible opportunities for
nature watchers and photographers alike. Birdwatchers also find Churchill well
worth the trip. During the shoulder seasons, thousands of birds fly over the town
on their immense migratory routes, sometimes connecting two continents. There
is no highway to Churchill, so visitors must arrive via train from Winnipeg,
or by plane.
